ASX Short Interest Weekly (May 22nd): Suncorp, BHP, Computershare, Northern Star Resources

Abstract: We analyzed ASX short interest as of May 22nd, covering stocks with market cap of at least USD 100m, with aggregated short interest of USD 43,982m. Short interest decreased 1.8% last week while the ASX200 index rose 0.3%, reflecting a broad short-covering trend. The largest decreases in short value were led by BHP (down USD 397m, or 14.1%), Rio Tinto (down USD 110m), Fortescue (down USD 110m), and Suncorp (down USD 95m, or 37.1%), while Northern Star Resources saw its short position fall 26.7% in dollar terms. On the other side, Commonwealth Bank of Australia added USD 148m in short value, National Australia Bank added USD 126m, and Wesfarmers saw short interest rise 18.0% in value. Computershare posted the sharpest percentage increase among notable names, with short value up 61.8% week on week.
