Bursa Short Interest Weekly (Aug 21st): AFFIN, Malayan Banking, Axis Real Estate Investment Trust

Abstract: We analyzed Bursa Malaysia short interest data as of August 21st for stocks with market capitalization of at least USD 100m, with aggregate short interest totaling USD 1,488m, up from USD 1,419m the prior week. Aggregate short interest rose 4.9% week-on-week, compared to a 0.5% gain in the KLSE index, reflecting a broadly bearish tilt against the market. The largest increases in short value were in Malayan Banking (+USD 32m), Press Metal (+USD 12m), and Gamuda (+USD 5.9m), while YTL Power International (-USD 2.8m) and IJM (-USD 1.4m) recorded the biggest reductions. By short coverage relative to average daily trading volume, Heineken (+2.79x ADT), AFFIN (+2.62x ADT), and Axis Real Estate Investment Trust (+1.17x ADT) saw the sharpest week-on-week increases, while ITMAX System (-0.79x ADT) and YTL Power International (-0.44x ADT) posted the largest decreases.
