ASX Short Interest Weekly (Sep 4th): CAR, Cochlear, Predictive Discovery, Sonic Healthcare

Abstract: We analyzed ASX short interest for stocks with market cap of at least USD 100m as of September 4th, with aggregated short interest totaling USD 51.0bn (up from USD 50.8bn the prior week). Short interest increased 0.5% over the week while the ASX200 index fell 1.0%, indicating bearish positioning diverged from the broader market decline. On the increase side, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA AU) saw the largest rise in short value at +USD 433m (+10.8%), followed by Westpac (WBC AU) at +USD 354m (+21.3%) and National Australia Bank (NAB AU) at +USD 300m (+26.5%). The largest short covering occurred in CAR (CAR AU), where short value fell USD 526m (-60.8%), followed by Cochlear (COH AU) at -USD 452m (-76.0%), Sonic Healthcare (SHL AU) at -USD 441m (-86.2%), and Stockland (SGP AU) at -USD 382m (-90.3%). By short shares as a percentage of outstanding, Sigma Pharmaceuticals (SIG AU) led the market at 30.6% with short value rising USD 162m to USD 971m, equivalent to 47.1x average daily trading volume.
